António Ole

On the Margins of the Borderlands 1994-95

Mixed-media installation

Collection of the artist

Over the past 15 years António Ole has created several provocative and critically acclaimed installations, of which this is the first. It has been exhibited on three continents and appears here for the first time in North America. The work stems from Ole's desire to draw attention to the history of colonial and local violence and to the architectural decay that surrounds him in Angola. Inside a broken boat that goes nowhere are police reports the artist collected off the street outside an administrative office. He paired the bundles of papers with birds that no longer fly and bricks that are not being used to build. The birds, net and scenic ocean waves playing on the TV sets refer to Angola's coast, his homeland. At once haunting and beautiful, this installation reveals Ole's ability to address difficult subject matter and still create a visually rich experience.

Jean Paul Lemieux

Surface Tension

The deceptive calm of Quebecois painter Jean Paul Lemieux.

Lemieux leaves behind him a curiously mixed legacy: of mystic exultation and harsh appraisal, of literal luminosity and metaphorical darkness. For Lemieux, the spring is but a brief prelude to an almost endless winter, but the winter has its charm as well.

Generation We - the Millennials - has arrived

Millennials are the largest generation in American history. Born between 1978 and 2000, they are 95 million strong, compared to 78 million Baby Boomers. They are independent—politically, socially, and philosophically—and they are spearheading a period of sweeping change in America and around the world. No one knows the Millennials like Eric Greenberg. In Generation We, Greenberg explains the emerging power of the Millennial Generation, shows how they (and their supporters from other generations) are poised to change our nation and our world for the better, and lays out a powerful plan for progressive change that today's youth is ready to implement.

Crumpled City Maps by Palomar

When you move to a new city or travel a lot, you tend to develop an aversion to maps. They’re usually too clumsy to carry around all the time, become tattered with frequent use, and the unfolding-refolding alone can drive you crazy. Then there’s Palomar’s Crumpled City Maps.
Made out of a special material that is 100 percent waterproof, these detailed maps can be crumpled up and carried anywhere without becoming too faded or creased. And thinking about my more recent travels, it would also probably come in handy when caught in the rain.

Out of my way

When I go out of my way I find myself in someone elses way.

Have You Ever Faked An Orgasm?

When you get nervous, it's so hard not to. When you're expected to come in something other than your ordinary way, to take pleasure in the new way, lost, not knowinghow

to drive it back to sureness. . . where are the thousand thousand flowers I always pass, the violet flannel, then the sharpness? You can't, you can't... extinguish the star

in a burst. It goes on glowing. That head between your legs so long. Could it really want to be there? One whimpers as though . . . then gets mad. One could smash the other's valiant head.

"You didn't come, did you?" Naturally, he knows. Although I try to lie, the truth escapes me almost like an orgasm itself. Then the "No" that should crack a world, but doesn't, slips free.

Mata Hari

Mata Hari (1876-1917) was the stage name of the Dutch exotic dancer and prostitute Gertrud Margarete Zelle, who was shot by the French as a spy on 15 October 1917.

Mata Hari's name has since become synonymous with espionage, although it remains by no means clear that she was guilty of the spying charges for which she charged.

The Full Moon Story

When Vogue Korea asked Kim Kyoungsoo, a renowned fashion photographer to realize a series of fashion portraits that would (re-actualize) the traditionnal Korean costum (Hanbok), he also decided to realize his series Full Moon Story. His models are elegantly staged, wearing somptuous Hanbok, with their haircuts and make-up done perfectly. There is a serenity, poetry and softness which emanates from the pictures that astonishes and instantly puts the viewer in a contemplative state of mind."During the National traditionnal festivities called 'Chuseok', many Korean people used to wear the hanbok. I wanted to show this typical ambiance with both a lyric and modern touch. I wanted a neutral stage; only shadows and reflections mattered to me: Colours, faces and models were enhanced by cold and light tones creating an almost surreal feeling."
